AN EARLY 14-BORE FLINTLOCK BIRDING-GUN SIGNED COLLUMBELL, LONDON, CIRCA 1740, serial no. 9,
37in. round barrel, signed on the top near breech 'COLLUMBELL LONDON No9' (probably shortened), scroll engraving to breech, London proofs, pointed top-tang (cracked and repaired through top-nail hole), radiused and slightly curved borderline engraved lock, scroll engraving to the pointed tail, signature erased from below pan, walnut full-stock with hand-rail butt (lower portion to toe professionally replaced, possibly in its working life), brass furniture including sideplate retaining traces of lacquer, iron stirrup swivels, the fore-end tip re-modelled and fitted with a replacement ramrod re-using original mounts
Provenance: David Collumbell was originally apprenticed to Gerrett Johnson of Ireland in 1711, but became a gunsmith in his own right trading from Westminster, London soon after. Between 1734-1756 he was allowed to bind apprentices for the Worshipful Company of Gun Makers and was listed as a maker to the Board of Ordnance in 1756 and the East India Company in 1761. He is last recorded in 1763 in Parliament Street, Westminster
